[NBC News] Zika Virus Mystery：How Did Dying Man Infect His Son?
A Utah man was infected with Zika virus after visiting Puerto Rico, he was the first Zika patient to pass away in the continental US. However, the physicians were not surprised with his death as he was very ill that even a common cold could have killed him. What surprised the physicians was his son infection with Zika virus.
Aedes aegypti is the primary mosquito vector for Zika virus. Utah doesn't have the kind of mosquitoes that transmit Zika, and the two people involved did not have sexual contact.
The only possible transmission route is the close contact between the dying old man and his son. Traditionally, the family would gather around the man, kiss his face, forehead and embrace him, help to change his sheets and clothes. The doctor suspects his son was infected during the close contact or while taking care of his father.
Zika has spread at epidemic rates across much of Latin America and the Caribbean. The CDC has reported more than 18,000 travelers from affected regions have carried Zika to the 50 states and to US territories. Hence, travelers should beware of the mosquitoes bite and use anti- mosquitos’ products to protect ourselves.
